presentation overview

Osteoarthritis can be a source of both acute and chronic pain that can influence both the individual’s behaviour and their wellbeing. This presentation aimed at non-veterinary professionals involved in an individual’s wellbeing care such as physios, behaviourists, trainers, and groomers, will outline the common behaviour changes we might see with acute and chronic pain. We will then briefly explore the bidirectional impact from pain on emotional wellbeing and emotional wellbeing on pain perception. This leads into consideration of anxiety-reducing medications and how non-vet professionals can have a base level of knowledge on how such medications might influence various aspects of the dog’s feelings and day-to-day management which can bring pros and cons with regard to their behaviour. This presentation will be based on current research in the form of literature review and centred around the journey of a real-life case to provide practical application.

dr. amber batson

Amber Batson graduated from the Royal Veterinary College, London in 1999. During the first year in primary care practice she recognized that many clients were asking behaviour- related questions so went on over several years to undertake a number of behaviour and welfare qualifications and to start studying psychoneuroimmunology – the field of medicine that considers the impact of stress and the environment on health, wellbeing and behaviour. Amber continued to work in primary care practice and alongside this, set up her business Understand Animals in 2007, looking to bridge the gap between published science and its practical application in companion animals for veterinary and non-veterinary professionals to apply.

Amber has offered behaviour education globally for over 15 years with a wide variety of audiences from vets to behaviourists, groomers and animal caregivers. She has offered behaviour consultations throughout this period using a multimodal approach that focuses as much on motivation of behaviour (including pain or disease) as training. Today she continues to work in practice and has a passion for co-operative care, patient-centred approaches and working in a collaborative way with all members of an individual’s care team.
