presentation overview

In this session, Dr. Sarah Caney will discuss the causes, presenting signs, recognition, and diagnosis of chronic pain in older cats. Although degenerative joint disease is a common source of chronic pain in this age group, presence of pain can be difficult for carers and clinicians to spot. Clinical signs of pain are often subtle with behavioural and lifestyle changes being evident rather than more obvious signs of pain. The insidious onset of painful conditions also makes it harder for carers to notice significant changes in their cat’s behaviour. This is further complicated by overlapping signs with other medical conditions; for example, periuria due to joint pain and difficulty accessing a litter box or using a cat-flap can be confused with lower urinary tract disease. Sarah will share her approach to problem solving these cases with reminders on medical conditions.
