Dr. emma milne
Emma graduated in 1996 and was in clinical practice for 12 years. She was a trustee of the Animal Welfare Foundation and sat as their representative on the BVA Ethics and Welfare group. She is a patron of the Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund and Dogs Trust and has worked with many other animal welfare charities.
In 2021 she was awarded an RCVS Fellowship for meritorious contributions to the profession in the field of animal welfare and sits on the Fellowship board.
She received the 2023 WSAVA Companion Animal Welfare Award and was IFAW Vet of the Year in 2008.

prof. nick bacon
Nick completed a Petsaver’s surgical residency at Cambridge and a Fellowship in Surgical Oncology at Colorado State University. He was Surgical Oncology Faculty at the University of Florida from 2006-2014.
Nick then moved back to the UK and was appointed Professor of Surgical Oncology at the University of Surrey School of Veterinary Medicine and co-founded AURA Veterinary, also in Guildford, Surrey. He is a Diplomate of the European and American Colleges of Veterinary Surgeons, and an ACVS Founding Fellow of Surgical Oncology.
Nick is on the Specialist Advisory Board for StreetVet (Soft Tissue and Oncology) and a founder member of the Oncology Working Group of the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA), a group of oncology specialists from across the globe, whose mission is to improve awareness of cancer in cats and dogs to the general public, and educate how veterinary surgeons can help, regardless of geography, language and resources.
Dr. heather bacon
Dr. Heather Bacon is a veterinarian and Dean of the Veterinary School at the University of Central Lancashire. She has worked internationally on veterinary education and animal welfare projects for over 15 years. She was previously responsible for developing and teaching animal welfare, behaviour and veterinary ethics to veterinary and postgraduate students at the University of Edinburgh, and in developing the Jeanne Marchig International Centre for Animal Welfare Education as a founding member of the team.
Additionally, she works with many charities, veterinary and other organisations to develop veterinary educational initiatives around the world, with a focus on improving the welfare of dogs, cats and captive and free-ranging wildlife. Heather’s research interests include changing human behaviour to improve the welfare of animals, and supporting the development of effective veterinary education.
