presentation overview

Several risk factors may predispose both humans and companion animals to the development of chronic post-surgical pain. These include body mass, anxiety, genomic factors, and delays in pursuing surgical intervention. Improved recognition of patients that may be at increased risk may allow patient-specific approaches to analgesia and surgery to be considered in order to reduce the chances of chronic post-surgical pain. Factors that will be discussed include pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative interventions. Pre-operatively, pharmacological and regional anaesthetic approaches, weight loss and the potential impact of exercise management on pain sensitivity will be considered. Intraoperative strategies may include local anaesthetic infiltration, minimally invasive approaches, careful dissection and techniques to minimize procedure time such as optimization of pre-operative planning, use of patient-specific guides and targeted surgeon training. Postoperatively, the impact of controlling pain trajectories and achieving an earlier return to function will be discussed.

dr. scott rutherford

Scott graduated from the University of Glasgow in 2001, and his first job was as a Temporary Veterinary Inspector during the Foot and Mouth Epidemic. He then spent six years in general practice, both mixed and small animal, including a stint in New Zealand, before moving to Croft Veterinary Hospital in Northumberland to undertake an ECVS Residency. He completed the RCVS Certificate in Small Animal Surgery in 2009, became a EBVS Specialist in Small Animal Surgery in 2013 and an RCVS Recognised Specialist in 2014.
