This talk will reframe companion animal chronic pain through the lens of clinical bioethics - moving beyond simple physiology - and suggest a formal bioethical framework within which to navigate potentially challenging decision-making on behalf of the painful patient.

dr. robin downing

Dr. Downing is Hospital Director of The Downing Center for Animal Pain Management, LLC. She has received many regional, national, and international awards, including the 2001 Excellence in Veterinary Medicine Award from the World Small Animal Veterinary Association, the 2016 Erwin Small Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, and the 2020 Leo K. Bustad Companion Animal Veterinarian of the Year Award from the AVMA.

In 2016 Dr. Downing earned her Master of Science degree in Clinical Bioethics from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in NYC and Union Graduate College. In 2022 she graduated with her Doctorate in Bioethics from the Neiswanger Institute of Ethics at Loyola University of Chicago. Dr. Downing is a Fear Free Elite Professional. She is translating the principles and practices of clinical bioethics for application to clinical veterinary practice, Fear Free medicine, comprehensive acute and chronic pain management, and end-of-life care.
