presentation overview

Beatriz will provide an overview of what animal welfare science is and its relevance to veterinary professionals. Then, she will present a brief review of chronic pain, including mechanisms and clinical characteristics. This will also include how the pain experience can be modulated by emotions. Amber will then take a brief look at how we recognize positive emotions in dogs, using a combination of body language and their actions, then focus on the type of activities that are most commonly associated with these. She will provide a short overview of different categories of activities most likely to bring joy and fun to our dogs and provide practical examples of how we can make observations of an individual to know what really works best for them and to consider how we may want to make adaptations to these experiences for dogs who are already in chronic pain.

Dr. amber batson

Amber Batson graduated from the Royal Veterinary College, London in 1999. She started working in general veterinary practice straight from graduating, but quickly became aware that many consultations involved elements of behaviour, which set her on a path of acquiring science-based behaviour knowledge.

For many years she worked in practice whilst undertaking a number of behaviour qualifications in dogs, horses and cats which became blended in with her veterinary work.

In 2007 she set up her own business, Understand Animals, with the aim to bridge the gap between up to date science and using that in a practical way to benefit animals and the humans they share their lives with. Alongside working in clinical vet practice, her business provides education across the globe regards animal behaviour and welfare, as well as providing vet behaviour consultations for clients and legal expert witness work.

Amber remains passionate about using science to support a pragmatic and empathetic approach to behaviour and physical issues in animals.

Dr. Monteiro received her veterinary degree from Unesp-Botucatu in Brazil and moved to Canada to complete two internships at the University of Guelph. She proceeded with the validation of her degree in North America and completed a PhD at the University of Montreal (UdeM) as a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholar. Thereafter, she worked as a Research Associate at the UdeM while running a consultancy business in animal pain and welfare.

She has a Postgraduate Diploma in International Animal Welfare, Ethics and Law from the University of Edinburgh, and an Advanced Certificate in Feline Behavior from the International Society of Feline Medicine. Recently, she became board-certified by the American College of Animal Welfare (ACAW). Currently, she works at Zoetis within the Global Medical Affairs as a Director of Veterinary Operations – Pain in Dublin, Ireland.

Dr. Monteiro has acted as the Chair of the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) Global Pain Council, and as a board member of the International Veterinary Academy of Pain (IVAPM) and the World Animal Protection Canada. She has authored over 70 peer-reviewed publications, 8 book chapters and has lectured in numerous international conferences.

Dr. Monteiro supports the use of science for guiding societal progress. She believes there is a path in which different stakeholders can partner with a common goal of promoting the concepts of One Welfare to improve the lives of animals and people while caring for the planet we all share.
